Why battery recycling is different

Charged batteries shred into fire. Safe processing starts with discharge or inert-atmosphere shredding, then crushing, screening and separation recover black mass (the cobalt/nickel/lithium-bearing fraction refiners buy), plus copper and aluminum. Buyers entering this market are typically existing recyclers adding a regulated, higher-value stream.

Key parameters to define

Typical configuration ranges

StageFunctionIndicative range
Discharge / inert feedingSafe energy removal before shreddingBy battery type
Shredding / crushingSealed or inert-atmosphere size reduction300 kg/h – 2 t/h
Pyrolysis (optional)Electrolyte and binder removalBy permit and market
SeparationScreening, air, magnetic for black mass/Cu/AlPurity per quotation

Ranges are indicative. Battery lines are engineered per feedstock and local regulation.

What a quotation should clarify

Quotation areaQuestions to record
Safety designHow are charged cells prevented from igniting in the shredder?
Black massWhat black mass purity and recovery rate is demonstrated?
Gas treatmentWhat off-gas and fluoride treatment is included?
ComplianceWhich emission standards can the line document?
ReferenceOperating reference sites processing similar batteries?
