Three materials, three jobs
| Material | Hardness | Toughness | Suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-manganese (Mn13) | ~HB200, work-hardens to HB500+ | High | High-impact feed: primary hammer crushing, large lumps |
| Cr26 high-chrome | HRC 58–62 | Low | Abrasive, low-impact feed: limestone fines, secondary crushing |
| Bimetal composite | HRC 58+ working face | High (steel back) | Both: hard face for wear, tough back against breakage |
The hardness–toughness tradeoff
Harder is not always better. A Cr26 head in a high-impact feed cracks instead of wearing. A Mn13 head in fine abrasive feed wears fast instead of working. The right choice follows the feed: lump size, rock hardness, and drop height.
Bimetal composite exists for the middle ground — a high-chrome working face fused to a tough steel back. It wears like high-chrome and survives like manganese steel. It costs more per kilo and less per tonne crushed.
Heads vs blow bars
- Hammer crusher heads: mounted on the rotor discs; high single-impact loads. High-manganese or bimetal, sized to the rotor.
- Impact crusher blow bars: seated in the rotor body; repeated medium impacts plus abrasion. High-chrome or bimetal, matched to the bar seats.
Send the crusher model and one worn piece — the wear pattern tells us more than the part number.
Common weight classes
| Class | Approx. weight | Typical crushers | Material options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 15 – 30 kg | Small hammer crushers | Mn13 / Cr26 |
| Medium | 40 – 80 kg | Mid-size hammer and impact crushers | Mn13 / Cr26 / Bimetal |
| Heavy | 90 – 150 kg | Large hammer crushers | Mn13 / Bimetal |
| Blow bars | 60 – 200 kg | PF / PFW impact series | Cr26 / Bimetal |
Exact dimensions, bolt-hole patterns and seat geometry follow your drawing or sample — weight classes are a starting point for the quotation, not the specification.
Service-life notes
- Feed size is the biggest lever. Oversize lumps shorten head life faster than any material choice.
- Wet, clayey feed accelerates wear and causes buildup — inspect more often, not less.
- Rotate reversible heads at half wear to use both working faces.
- Check the rotor balance when changing a full set; uneven wear vibrates the bearings.
