The die set decides the chamber
A jaw crusher has two dies: fixed and swing. They wear as a pair and should be replaced as a pair. A new swing die running against a worn fixed die gives an uneven chamber — throughput drops and power draw climbs.
The tooth profile matters as much as the material. Corrugated (sharp-tooth) profiles grip and nip the feed; the pitch suits the feed size. We cast standard corrugated profiles and match special pitches to your sample.
Materials for jaw dies
| Grade | Character | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Mn13 | Classic Hadfield steel; work-hardens in service | General quarry rock, moderate abrasion |
| Mn18 | Higher manganese; harder working surface | Hard rock: granite, basalt, river gravel |
| Mn22 | Maximum manganese content | Severe abrasion, large feed, high throughput |
Mn13 remains the default for most primary jaws. Step up to Mn18 or Mn22 when die life — not crusher price — is your bottleneck.
Fit: standard series and equivalents
We cast dies for the PE and PEX jaw crusher series and for the common Metso and Sandvik equivalents. Send the crusher model or the OEM part number and we confirm the pattern.
Custom casting from samples
No drawing? No part number? Send the worn die — or a section of it. We take the profile, correct for wear, and cast to the original geometry. This is routine work for our foundries.
Always replace fixed and swing dies together. Mixing a new die with a worn one distorts the crushing chamber and shortens the life of both.
When to change the dies
Jaw dies rarely fail suddenly — they fade. Watch for the signs:
- Throughput drops at the same closed-side setting. The chamber has worn oversize.
- Power draw climbs for the same tonnage. Worn teeth slip instead of nipping.
- Product gets flaky. The nip angle is gone and rock slabs through instead of breaking.
- Tooth height is halved. Past this point, wear accelerates and the die body is at risk.
Changing dies on schedule costs less than running them to destruction — a cracked die body damages the crusher, not just the schedule.
